Session 1 – My Shepherd (But You Don’t Know Me): Persian Policies of Interfaith Inclusiveness

Persian kings fostered a stronger empire by inspiring subjects’ loyalty – notably, through a policy of respecting local religions and religious leaders, and even participating in the religious ceremonies and religious roles of their subjects’ religions. At the time, this approach was a new paradigm for empires in the region — but what can we learn from it today?

NOTE: Based on Dr. Lucas Schulte’s research findings in his book My Shepherd, though You Do not Know Me: The Persian Royal Propaganda Model in the Nehemiah Memoir

Key takeaway: Learn how inclusiveness of other religious identities can help strengthen societal cohesion.
